Rebalancing calculator
Rebalancing sizes the buys and sells that restore target weights. Targets must add to 100%; they are not scaled to fit. Contribution-only mode never sells.
Trade = target weight × total value − current value
Trades
Enter a current value and target weight for at least two holdings. Empty rows are ignored.
How to size a rebalance
- Enter each holding. Current value in USD and a target weight as a percent. Empty rows are ignored.
- Check that targets add to 100%. 60 and 40 is fine. 60 and 30 is not — the missing 10% is not filled in for you.
- Optional: contribution-only. Adds new cash to underweights and never sells. Leftover cash is shown if every target is already met.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate a rebalance trade?
- Target weight times the total portfolio, minus what you already hold. $6,000 and $4,000 with 50/50 targets means sell $1,000 of the first and buy $1,000 of the second. Targets must add to 100%; they are not scaled in silence.
- What does contribution-only mode do?
- New cash is used to buy underweights. Overweights are never sold. If the contribution cannot reach every target, leftover demand stays unmet rather than forcing a sale.
- Is this investment advice?
- No. The calculator is for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any security.
