Retirement savings calculator
This projects a balance from current savings, a salary, the percent you contribute, and the percent of salary an employer adds. The match field is the percent you actually receive, not a tiered match formula. Salary and the return stay flat at the numbers you type. The retirement savings guide uses the same example.
Annual addition = salary × (your contribution percent + employer match percent). That addition compounds with the current balance until the retirement age you enter.
Balance at retirement
Enter both ages, a balance, salary, contribution percents, and a return.
How to project retirement savings
- Enter ages and the current balance. Retirement age has to be higher than the current age. The current balance may be zero.
- Enter salary, your contribution percent, and the match percent. Both percents are shares of salary. The sum is added monthly, one twelfth each month, at the end of the month.
- Enter the return and inflation. The return compounds monthly. Leave inflation blank to treat it as zero and skip the purchasing-power line's reduction.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the employer match enter the projection?
- Type the match as a percent of salary, the amount the employer actually adds. A 4% match on an $80,000 salary is $3,200 a year. Combined with a 10% employee contribution, the annual addition is $11,200. This field is not a match formula such as 50% of the first 6%. Enter the percent of salary you receive.
- What does the inflation-adjusted balance show?
- It divides the nominal ending balance by the inflation rate compounded over the years to retirement. The nominal balance is unchanged. The adjusted figure is purchasing power in today's dollars if that inflation rate holds.
- Is this investment advice?
- No. The calculator is for general informational and educational purposes only. Salary, match, return, and inflation stay at the values you type. They are not a forecast.
